During the Japanese Colonial Period, the development of modern art in Taiwan led to the establishment of art societies across the island. These organizations helped organize and promote artistic exchange and exhibitions. Examples of such organizations include: the Taiwan Watercolor Painting Society and Chi-Hsing Painting Society mentored by Ishikawa Kinichiro; the Chih-Yang Western Painting Society, founded by painters from the island's southern region; the Chiayi-based Chun-meng Painting Society; and, the Tai-Yang Fine Art Society, which had a profound influence over the art across the country. All of these organizations were representative of Chen’s generation. Aside from his participation in the establishment of art societies in Taiwan, Chen Cheng-po also participated with the highly important Juelan Society during his residence in Shanghai.
